A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening

This was funny to me. None of the results surprize me at all! I’m a derpy-word-nerd-trekiwhovian. ^_^

Ok, so, about the titles. I have a tough time coming up with names so I like to use the name of a song I listened to whilst writing this post. Last time I was getting ready for Elegant Evening and I liked that title better than any of the others I listened to. I was going to title this post “Baby It’s Cold Outside”, because it did in fact come up on my Pandora, it is uncommonly cold. In fact, drum roll please. <brtrtrt> It snowed. I’m not kidding at all. Last Thursday it snowed about 2-3 inches. I’m still kind of in shock.  But anyway, I would like to focus more on recent events and less on the weather. lol

Elegant Evening was splendid fun. It was contra dancing similar to what I have done before, so knowledge helped make up for clumsiness. There were only a couple of guys (although most of the dads danced at least a couple and our caller danced almost all of the dances), so many of us had to dance as boys. It really doesn’t matter for this kind of dancing though, it can make it a bit confusing sometimes, but it does make it less awkward. It was great fun, and didn’t feel like three hours at all. Perhaps one, but certainly not three.

Last Tuesday (30th not the 7th) Meg, Claire and I gave our speeches. Megs was about alter egos, focusing on Superman, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Julia Child. It was really interesting and she did marvelously. My speech was quite fun. It was a demonstration on making apple cobbler in a dutch oven. Normally it wouldn’t have been to entertaining, but once I got done explaining what a dutch oven is and got into the cooking show it really kicked up. Literally  I started out by setting out my cartons of “ingredients”  (small cardboard boxes marked butter, sugar, flour and milk). I nonchalantly put the ingredients in my large bowl as I told the steps.  Then I took my wooden spoon and began pounding the boxes and mixing them up. Everyone in the room jumped when I first began beating boxes, and then laughed as I kept the gag up. It was wonderful fun, and it was going very well, but I got so caught up in it I lost my place and cut my ending short. It didn’t affect my score though and I don’t think the teacher noticed (at least she didn’t seem to when I mentioned it afterwards). Unfortunately, Claire gave her speech about Betta Fish (complete with live fish! Volucris was fine on the car ride to and from, but Claire got a little bit wet lol) as I was in the kitchen scooping up cobbler for everyone. 😦

Poetic Voices was right after debate, and it was brilliant. There were the usual cliche “woe is me, I am undone” poems, but there were also quite a few that really made me chuckle. Claire was the opener and did a fantastic job! Everyone laughed at all the right places! Meg did a wonderful job as well! She was so poised and elegant, tranquilly talking about leaves and then, their demise.  It was so funny! 😀 Mine went much better than last time! I didn’t hide behind my hair (thanks to my crochet hook) and a think I spoke clearly and with good tone. I may have been a bit close to the microphone though, and I coughed into it. Stupid allergies.

I know I already talked about my graduation, but I want to share something God is teaching me. I had been wondering how I was going to get the registration deposit together for my doula training, let alone pay for the rest of  it.  The total sum of my graduation gifts was almost exactly what I need to reserve a spot in the class. Ok God, You have my attention. You will provide everything I need.  I’m not wondering how to earn the money I need. I’m not wondering how to get a job or why even McDonalds hasn’t called me back. I may be curious, but He will take care of it.

I have some more news, but I’ll save that for Friday (hint)!

Why I am Glad I Got Pulled Over

I got pulled over this evening, and I’m proud of it.

You read that right.

A little background first.

I’ve been pulled over at least three times since I got my license three years ago, but I’ve never had to pay a fine. I’ve only gotten one ticket, for giving the officer an expired insurance card, that they dismissed because I just gave him the old card. None of the three times have been for any traffic violations. The first two times it was because the front license plate wouldn’t stay on. Dad fixed it and we didn’t have any problems. This time was still not my fault, but was quite different.

Meg, Claire and I went up to Summit Fair to do some window shopping. We do this every once in a while, but it had been a long while since we went last. After exploring Charming Charlie and JCPenny (the new logo still throws me) we were on our way home. To get back to the car we had to pass SmallCakes. Cupcakes. Yum. We had to stop.

Meg got chocolate caramel pretzel, Claire got cookies and cream and I got peanut butter cup. Wow. Yum. Om nom nom. Personally I liked Meg’s best, I’m quite a fan of salted caramel.

After our de-lish cupcake snack we stopped at Quik Trip for water. I noticed a bunch of police cars driving in the same direction, but assumed it was just the equivalent of shift change, like I’ve seen many times in Hville. I pulled out and noticed there was a patrol car behind me. He didn’t have his lights on, so although I made sure to be extra careful, I thought nothing of it.

I was on my merry way. I had just gotten on the highway towards home. He was still behind me. And there were the lights. Awesome.

I knew I hadn’t done anything, so I assumed there must be a light out or something. I pulled over and turned on the inside lights and we all kept our hand visible. It was the little lights above the license plates. Go figure. But there was something else I didn’t expect. A dark green sedan was creepin’ the neighborhood the QT was in about an hour and a half ago, and we were driving a dark green sedan. Cool. I explained that we were shopping and eating cupcakes at that time. He took my license and Megs permit back to his car and– did whatever it is they do. He came back and let us go, they were looking for a male.

Why was I glad to get pulled over? Because the police were doing their job. Looking for bad guys.

Produce Part 1:Tomatoes

Sorry I haven’t written much, I wasn’t very sure of what to write about, but our last few days activities have inspired me!

A few weeks ago a friend invited me to go with her a produce auction. I had NO clue what to expect, I had never been to an auction, let alone a produce auction. Oh well, I went anyway. This is one of my best friends and it would get me out of cleaning the house for the lady from the homeschool group who was coming that evening.  

The night before when I was getting ready I thought about bringing a sweater because it had been surprisingly cold. We headed out in their awesome, huge truck. We went into town and got on the highway. It was a twistier, turnier road than I had ever thought was around here. o.O Once we got there it was neat to see all the buggies. It reminded me of when we lived in Kentucky.  I was talking about it later with mom trying to figure if they were Amish or Old Order Mennonite. I’m still not sure, it’s so had to tell. There was a little girl holding her daddies hand, I told mom “It would have made a great picture, but I wouldn’t want to, you know, steal their souls or anything.” She got a big kick out of that, but you might not get it.

Anyway, we got to the auction and got out of the truck, then walked to the pole barn/pavilion thing where they had everything set up. We walked around and waited for the auction to start. There were a lot of smells. Pungent produce and even people.

The auction started and quickly got boring. I couldn’t understand what he was saying, I might have caught on if the speaker hadn’t been so loud. It’s really amazing that people can talk that fast (I think Claire could do it). BMW and I went back to the truck to play cards. Once we exhausted the supply games we knew (I won one :P) we went back to the pavilion. After a while we started loading tomatoes, and boy, were there tomatoes. I lost count of how many boxes there were, but it was somewhere around 20 of those 25lb boxes. There were onions and melons too, but nothing in mass like the tomatoes.

We went back to the house and began canning. I hadn’t ever processed tomatoes, let alone canned them! I learned quickly, to process tomatoes. I’m still not sure how to can, but we skinned and cut tomatoes until my eyes were truly crossing (I’m not exaggerating! I would look up and not be able to see right!). I believe the count I heard last was 40 quarts of tomatoes. I would certainly believe it. I’m pretty sure my hands have never been wrinkly for as long as they were that afternoon.

I’m sure there’s a good lesson in there somewhere. Perhaps not to try to get out of work, it will just get you more work. Or maybe, beware the unknown. All I know is my previous dislike for tomatoes was greatly reinforced.

After we got done for the day I got sent home with some tomatoes, onions, squash and watermelon sized cantaloupe (and not just a small watermelon, a large one). Since we don’t really eat tomatoes much I didn’t take many, and they sat in the box for a few days. But then I thought of something to do with them! Salsa! I hadn’t ever made it before so I looked up some recipes. We didn’t have all the things for any of them, so I decided to just wing it. My first attempt was ok, after some tweaking. We decided to leave out the onion and try again. This time it was muy delicioso! :9  The only problem was the overpowering “raw” smell, next time I think we will roast the tomatoes and jalapeno.

1 1/2 cups tomatoes, peeled, cored and as much water squeezed out as possible

1 capped jalapeno

1T lemon juice

approx 1-2 t garlic salt

Mix everything in food processor. (try either oven roasting or just cooking on stovetop)
